FM40 is assigned by a deterministic crosswalk from exactly two inputs — ESA WorldCover 2021 land cover (CC-BY-4.0) and Beck et al. (2018) Köppen-Geiger present-day climate (CC-BY-4.0) — with land cover setting the fuel family (non-burnable / grass / grass-shrub / shrub / timber-understory / timber-litter) and climate refining it (e.g. Mediterranean shrub → SH5, tropical forest → TL9, boreal forest → TU5). Because it derives only from CC-BY-4.0 sources — no Meta canopy, no LANDFIRE, no share-alike inputs — the product is fully CC-BY-4.0 and commercially redistributable; it replaces the earlier CC-BY-NC ML fuel line as the free, commercial-clean layer. Globally consistent by construction (no US-training bias). v1.0 ships the fuel-model class only; per-pixel canopy attributes are a v1.1 item. Coast-clipped to the GSHHG full-resolution shoreline; Antarctica excluded. Validated by biome plausibility and US LANDFIRE family agreement. Feeds the Petrel Wildfire Hazard's Cell2Fire surface-fuel grid. references: - type: report authors: - family-names: "Scott" given-names: "Joe H." - family-names: "Burgan" given-names: "Robert E." title: "Standard fire behavior fuel models: a comprehensive set for use with Rothermel's surface fire spread model" year: 2005 doi: "10.2737/RMRS-GTR-153" - type: data authors: - family-names: "Zanaga" given-names: "Daniele" title: "ESA WorldCover 10 m 2021 v200" year: 2022 doi: "10.5281/zenodo.7254221" - type: article authors: - family-names: "Beck" given-names: "Hylke E." title: "Present and future Koppen-Geiger climate classification maps at 1-km resolution" year: 2018 doi: "10.1038/sdata.2018.214"
